About the event
August 15th is a significant day known as the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our Basilica, dedicated to Mary, celebrates this solemn feast with great joy and reverence.
Dating back to as early as the fifth century, the Assumption holds the distinction of being one of the oldest holy days in the Church. It serves as a remembrance of the blessed departure of Our Lady from her earthly life and the elevation of her body into the realms of heaven. Through this event, we catch a glimpse of our own eventual bodily resurrection at the culmination of time. It is important to clarify that Catholics do not believe that Mary "ascended" into heaven by her own power, but rather she was assumed, or taken up, into heaven by the divine will of God.
On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII officially declared the Assumption of Mary as a dogma of the Church. This dogma affirms that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed her earthly journey, was taken up, body and soul, into the glory of heaven. The Assumption stands as an integral truth within the history of salvation, demanding our belief and acceptance. In embracing this belief, we follow the example of Christ Himself, who deeply honored His mother.
